Why you should read books you know nothing about - .Jagua Nana, Ekwensi's most successful and widely-read novel, was published in It returned to the setting of People of the City and was centred on the character of Jagua, a courtesan with a love for expensive things who leaves her husband to work as a prostitute in a city and falls in love with a teacher.

The book explored the conflict. Jagua Nana is actually a very well written book, as Ekwensi was an acknowledged dexterous story-teller even if some nzna critics tended to undermine him.

Here he presents a magnificent picture of a veritable, shameless, calculating and ruthless African prostitute.
